It was very clear that she watched the direct-to-DVD Mulan 2 movie. I also have to give the author major props for doing her homework. She did a great job incorporating the Chinese underworld and mythology into the story. You can tell that the author knew the culture so well. I think #OwnVoices literature is so important. I’m so glad I did because this was really good!įirst off, I was really happy that Disney choose a Asian author to write this book. Then the Beauty and the Beast one and this one came out and they got better reviews.

Typically, I’ll read any Disney related book, but the first two books in the series got such mixed reviews, that it deterred me from picking one up. If you love Mulan, you should definitely give this one a shot!įor the longest time I’ve been debating whether or not to read the Twisted Tales from Disney. I truly enjoyed Elizabeth Lim's take on this classic tale and look forward to reading more from her in the future. This is now officially my favorite book in the Twisted Tales series, out of the ones I have read thus far. I loved the dark atmosphere of the entire tale. The obstacles she faced were genuinely terrifying. Following Mulan into Diyu had a very Alice in Wonderland fever dream quality to it. Although a bit tougher on Mulan than Mushu, I still adored his character. Like Mushu in the original version of Mulan, ShiShi added a great deal of humor to the story. Accompanying her into Diyu is Shang's lion guardian, ShiShi. If she fails, however, she will remained trapped in the Underworld as Yama's prisoner forever. King Yama, ruler of the Underworld, has presented Mulan with a deal, the terms of which she has accepted.īasically, if she can navigate through the different levels of Diyu by sunset, facing numerous obstacles along the way, Shang will be revived and she will be released. In this addition to Disney's Twisted Tales series, we follow Mulan, still posing as the solider Ping, as she travels into the Underworld, Diyu, to try to save Captain Shang from death.
