It was very clear that she watched the direct-to-DVD Mulan 2 movie. I also have to give the author major props for doing her homework. She did a great job incorporating the Chinese underworld and mythology into the story. You can tell that the author knew the culture so well. I think #OwnVoices literature is so important. I’m so glad I did because this was really good!įirst off, I was really happy that Disney choose a Asian author to write this book. Typically, I’ll read any Disney related book, but the first two books in the series got such mixed reviews, that it deterred me from picking one up. If you love Mulan, you should definitely give this one a shot!įor the longest time I’ve been debating whether or not to read the Twisted Tales from Disney. I truly enjoyed Elizabeth Lim's take on this classic tale and look forward to reading more from her in the future. This is now officially my favorite book in the Twisted Tales series, out of the ones I have read thus far. I loved the dark atmosphere of the entire tale. The obstacles she faced were genuinely terrifying. Following Mulan into Diyu had a very Alice in Wonderland fever dream quality to it. Although a bit tougher on Mulan than Mushu, I still adored his character. Like Mushu in the original version of Mulan, ShiShi added a great deal of humor to the story. Accompanying her into Diyu is Shang's lion guardian, ShiShi. If she fails, however, she will remained trapped in the Underworld as Yama's prisoner forever. What would Mulan be willing to do in order to save him? This pivotal moment of the film is one of the most tense and exciting in any animated Disney movie, but what if Shang ended up mortally wounded during the course of that fight? She lives in New York City with her husband.Īny Mulan fan knows that nail-biting scene where Captain Shang and Shan Yu wage battle high in the mountain pass. One day, she decided to write and finish a novel - for kicks, at first, then things became serious - and she hasn't looked back since.Įlizabeth loves classic film scores, books with a good romance, food (she currently has a soft spot for arepas and Ethiopian food), the color turquoise, overcast skies, English muffins, cycling, and baking. But she always missed writing, and turned to penning stories when she needed a breather from grad school. Over the years, Elizabeth became a film and video game composer, and even went so far as to get a doctorate in music composition. And that's kinda cool!" But after one of her teachers told her she had "too much voice" in her essays, Elizabeth took a break from creative writing to focus on not flunking English. Her passion for storytelling began around age 10, when she started writing fanfics for Sailor Moon, Sweet Valley, and Star Wars, and posted them online to discover, "Wow, people actually read my stuff. Elizabeth Lim grew up on a hearty staple of fairy tales, myths, and songs.
